Research

My dissertation project looks at the politics of sea level rise adaptation on the California coast. Using data from archival materials, semi-structured interviews, and ethnographic observation, I look at closely at the political contests of climate adaptation—negotiating private-public boundaries, institutionalizing whose voice is heard in adaptation planning—to explain emerging patterns of inequality as well as opportunities for a more just, democratic approach to adaptation. My project has received support from the Climate Social Science Network. I am founder of the Housing Justice and Climate Adaptation Working Group and Co-Founder of the Critical Climate Adaptation Working Group at UCLA, both of which receive support from the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy. My writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books among other publications.
